Coroners and medical examiners have no oversight, they make their own rules and NO ONE has the authority to overrule them. Time to talk to state officials in all states and require that an unelected oversight board be instated for accountability of these mostly unqualified politicians
“Dead people don’t vote.” The closing line of this PBS feature rings the tragedy of the elected coroner system. Exposing rampant incompetence and corruption all over the US, PBS focuses on exactly what happens to a body after death for 55 minutes; especially in states with Coroners.
A Medical Examiner is a Doctor, a Coroner is an elected official. The qualifications vary from state to state but many only require a high school diploma for a Coroner. Because of this lack of education, the coroner system is off to a bad start at defending itself, add in that it is generally run by the Sheriff’s Department and one adds a level of conflict of interest.
