Klysta LaNell Breshears
Len Carver and her husband left Missouri to return to their home in Kansas soon after the final arrangements were made for Len’s daughter, Klysta LaNell Breshears. The return trip was solemn, not much to talk about, but Len’s brain was working overtime.
Thinking to herself Len wondered, if she could talk to her daughter, what would she tell her?
Going over and over the scene at the funeral home in her mind Len wanted to remember every detail beginning with the moment she arrived.
As if Klysta could hear, Len silently talked to her, “Collapsing at the door of the building and being placed in a wheel chair to just fall into a million pieces of glass inside at the sight of you lying there under the velvet coverlet; pale where you were not bruised. Brushing your hair from your face as I did when you needed soothing as a newborn, caressing your ear as if that would bring a smile to your black and blue waxen face. Holding you and them telling me, “no, no”. There was no way in hell they were going to stop me! You were my first-born, I held you as you took your first look at the world and by God I was going to hold you one more time in death”, Len told Klysta in her thoughts.
Len promised Klysta that day that she would make ‘them’ pay…..she would find out who did these horrible things to her daughter.
“I burned up the telephone lines those first few weeks, but it did no good. The one detective, Ron Boyd of Morgan County Sheriff’s office only replied that Ralph had passed two lie detector tests and they would keep watching for him to do something to tip them off and then they would ‘get him’ was all they would tell me,” Len said.
Finally, Len received a copy of the autopsy and death certificate. She quickly skimmed the documents for details. Several items jumped off the page of the death certificate:
The autopsy was done at the request of the local coroner, “Dr. Jones” and performed on February 20, 2011 at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles, Missouri. By Dr. Ed Friedlander, Lead pathologist; Shawn Parcells, FPA was lead Forensic Pathologist Assistant. Also present, medical students Landon Akin and James Kesi from KCUMB Medical School.(From the school web site: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences is a place where vision becomes reality.)
According to the report, the decedent had not been feeling well for the past couple of days prior to her death. (February 17 & 18, Thursday and Friday).
EVIDENCE OF EXTERNAL TRAUMATIC INJURY:
Noted are numerous bruises and abrasions to the arms, hands, knees, and legs.
Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, agonal; hemorrhagic duodenitis, along with a few other organ changes and notations.
The cause of death is morphine toxicity
The manner of death is undetermined
Len was unable to get a police report until nearly two years later; February 4, 2013. This report confirms the lack of detective work on the part of the local sheriff. They were careless in preserving evidence, disregarded the concerns of Klysta’s mother and siblings. Weeks went by and no one was working the case.
Page five of the report is an “Incident Detail Report”. Judging from the spelling and language it would appear the detectives were lacking in basic reading, writing and spelling skills as well as death investigation training.
Len is correct in her assumption that she will probably never know what happened to her daughter. But that won’t stop her from inquiring and investigating.
A poem to her daughter:
BY: Len Williams Carver
what were your last thoughts
was it travel with ticket bought
did you know somehow
of your ascension to heaven
did you know we would
grieve for you and our world
is now hell twenty-four seven
do you know now how much
you were are and will forever be
Wonder all these with no answers
RIP KLYSTA LaNELL
