Death Investigations: Why investigators must be properly trained

Raymond Zachry, sudden, unexplained death – Montgomery County Pennssylvania coroner refuses to allow an investigation into the poison that caused his heart to stop

“I can tell you from experience that you must treat every death as if it is suspicious until the evidence proves otherwise. This avoids the dreadful phone call from the medical examiner / coroner three days later, “We have a problem.” This is another reason that a department policy on having an investigator respond to every death case is important. The decision should not be up to the patrol if the death appears to be natural or accidental. I don’t care how many medications or how old the person is. A well-trained, observant investigator should respond to the scene.”

(Emphasis added)

How many others have similar situations, how many citizens are sitting in jail for a crime they did not do because an elected politician refuses to release information that could solve the case.

How did healthy 47-year-old, Raymond Zachry collapse and die beside his truck?  And, why no death investigation into the lethal, poisonous chemical that was listed on his NMS Laboratory report?

Why is there no oversight?  Why is this a political office, often held by unqualified persons?  Why would a politically elected person have so much power over so many law enforcement departments and there is no oversight?

These questions arise every time there is a sudden, unattended death that is ignored by these unqualified, corrupt by power politicians.

According to his bio, Joe Giacalone has a long history in solving cases shelved by detectives and local police.  And, some that families believe were mishandled by so-called death investigators. It is worth taking the time to read some of his posts.

From the weblog:

Joseph L. Giacalone is a retired NYPD Detective Sergeant who held many prestigious positions

during his more than 20 year career. Most of his career was dedicated to conducting and

supervising major criminal investigations. Joe was the Executive Officer of the 110th Precinct

Detective Squad in Queens and the Commanding Officer of the Bronx Cold Case Squad. He was

responsible for managing thousands of cold case homicides and missing persons cases. While

working, Joe found the time to obtain a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice with a Specialty in

Crime and Deviance from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 2005.”

  3. You must be so angry and frustrated!! I so wish that you could have some closure…Hugs and prayers that Ray’s murderers will be caught out. If not we will have to wait for karma….“Karma comes after everyone eventually. You can’t get away with screwing people over your whole life, I don’t care who you are. What goes around comes around. That’s how it works. Sooner or later the universe will serve you the revenge that you deserve.” ― Jessica Brody, The Karma Club

Dr. Baden says “Of the nearly 671,000 doctors currently licensed to practice in the United States, fewer than 3 percent, or 17,149 doctors, are specialists in pathology, according to the American Medical Association.”
I agree they need to be educated but I am also saying in so many instances, It has more to do with ethics, seems like some coroners just don’t care, until they have been found out about their unethical ways, and by then look what the victims have had to live with because of them? Take for instance Ray, the world knows his death was caused by poisoning, yet instead of trying to right that wrong he hides his head in the sand, and in doing so started a domino effect of injustice not only against Ray but his family. His not making it right is where the ethics came in, he knows Ray was poisoned, he let a murder go . how does he live with himself? Anyone following this case has asked our selves countless times what did he stand to gain by not admitting his mistake? Stupidity is not a hanging crime, You know they need to have commissions to over see coroner corruption just like they have Innocence commissions for the wrongly convicted. I sit here S,M.H because every time I think of this coroner my stomach turns knowing what he has gotten away with, and knowing that b^^^h is out there walking free because of this guy! .The laws have to be changed, and this particular corner needs to stand up and be a man.
