REUTERS JUST POSTED: Background check law could get some Pennsylvania teachers fired
A just released story by Tim Sohn(Reuters) informs Pennsylvania teachers and “all school workers” they will be required to disclose their criminal history.
Sohn goes on to state, “the law, which is retroactive, bans anyone convicted of certain crimes from school district employment for anywhere from three years to life”.
This could have an important impact on two defendants in the forgery case we are following. Darlene Zachry, recently suspended from Lancaster School District due to 51 charges including multiple felony as well as misdemeanor in Montgomery County, PA.
Another of the four defendants is a teacher at Community College of Baltimore County. William “Bill” Werneke teaches CAD at the Catonsville branch of CCBC and no confirmation is available if he has been suspended due to the felony charges.
Perhaps Maryland and other states will copy this new Pennsylvania law and aggressively enforce it – that should make some think a little longer before becoming involved in unlawful activity, if they want to teach our new generation.
